Manahau: Toward an Indigenous Māori theory of value

Abstract The theoretical challenge posed by this paper is to find a conceptualisation of value for entrepreneurship theory grounded in Indigenous knowledge from Māori perspective capable guiding entrepreneurs operating sustainability and wellbeing. We review Western theories value, values, valuation. argue that concepts centre on collective wellbeing as opposed self-interest, have spiritual material elements. proposes tentative we call manahau, which combines mana (power, authority, dignity) hau (vitality people, places, objects). define manahau an axiological agent employ synergistically negotiate cultural commercial imperatives achieve multidimensional wellbeing, human potential, relational balance. discuss research illustrates manifestations the ethics utu (reciprocity) tauutuutu (reciprocity balance) agribusiness. has implications practice.
